Richard Ducker, still from URGENT: SLEEP BETTER<br />

<br />
New Doggerland is a new multi-disciplinary artists project for a future
imagining of physical and cultural re-connection between Britain and
the European mainland. Doggerland is the name given to the ancient
landmass, now submerged, that once connected Britain to Northern Europe.
What if a new land mass rises up and we become physically part of the
mainland again?<br />
New Doggerland is a project about future land and
humans. It asks questions to which the exhibitors and participants
respond with different ideas and answers. Who will be living there and
how? It may evoke a Ballardian dystopia, or ideas of possible Utopia. Or
could New Doggerland be the heterotopia where we go to experience
'other' selves, a place of becoming?<br />
About the artwork: featured
works include film, textiles, painting, sculpture, ceramics and
installation. Details of featured artists' works:<br />
Borne from the
bogs of the lowland heath that extend from East Anglia into New
Doggerland, an ancient amphibian girl with an inverted digestive system.
A girl that gave herself to the watery land and became a god. Realised
in rubber by The Elaborate Kingdom.<br />
<b>Frances Burden's</b>
stitched pieces and works on paper range from the uniformity of Orwell
and Huxley to the wild Egyptian glamour of Earth Wind and Fire, to
explore the common cultural themes of a future imagining about the look
of dress and costume. Her pieces here are a sample selection for the
everyday and the ceremonial.<br />
<b>Virginia Verran’s</b>
paintings and drawings suggest multiple perspectives, from body to land;
vestigial remains in deep space, aerial scanning and surveillance,
virtual mappings that show the tracing of action and process; a
personal world of invented motifs and symbols suggestive of flags,
tiny bombs, rooftops, ladders, outlying islands, with lines and motifs
that track back and forth between nodes.<br />
<b>Oona Grimes’</b>
chorus of bird heads fuses bird and clown, Neorealism and Etruscan.
The avian profile of the Italian comic actor, Toto, is discernible in
many of these unhinged puppet-like heads - trickster and sub-proletariat
Neapolitan. Like her drawings of snotty children, faces pinched and
frozen, these bird heads ooze emotion from cartilage, beak and glassy
eye. “...all archaic mythological figures and events are available as a
thesaurus of glyphs or token symbols” (Ted Hughes, Shakespeare and the
Goddess of Complete Being).<br />
<b>Freddie Robins’s</b>
piece, All the same, is produced using automated, digital, knitting
technology. A technology developed to achieve perfect repetition,
removing all human touch from industrial production. Why is this
desirable? Why do we want everything to be the same? Why can’t we accept
different as equal? This work continues Robins’s questioning of
conformity and her resistance to notions of ‘normality'.<br />
<b>Nicky Hodge’s</b>
cluster of minimal abstract paintings has a bareness around the edges
and a focus on the margins and boundaries. Indicative of an
indeterminate process, the work reveals something about a sense of
becoming as a response to an uncertain future.<br />
Sculptor <b>Deborah Gardner</b>
considers future shifting plant environments from the local to the
alien and imaginary plants in space, partly inspired by recent images of
NASA’s experiments with growing plants on space craft and visions of
extra-terrestrial colonisation.<br />
<b>Sarah Kogan's</b>
paintings revolve around ideas of landscape, abstraction & memory.
In her imagined resurgence of New Doggerland, she evokes memories of
forgotten lands, like an amputated limb that has re-grown. Its’ physical
manifestation symbolises a newly extended version of ourselves and our
relationship to feelings of absence and loss.<br />
<b>Jane Millar's</b>
ceramic sculpture envisions a future crisis of teaching lost knowledge.
Her wall-based 'test beds', guessed-at planets, and a Werkbund type
traveller's teaching and display case triggers unrecovered memories and
soothes feelings of loss.<br />
Artist <b>Sarah Sparkes</b> work
'Heroes and Villains' is drawn from both archaeological and science
fiction mythologies. She has imagined her work for New Doggerland as a
manifestations from the sentient ocean in Stanislaw Lem's Solaris - a
Post-Anthropocene dream of hunter-gatherers.<br />
<b>Jo Lawrence</b>
re-imagines rejected rubbish as precious archaeological finds of the
Anthropocene. The imagined formation of New Doggerland from accumulated
waste washed up in the North Sea gives rise to a future culture inspired
by the visual overload of plastic detritus. Carried during processions
‘marottes’ (heads on sticks with articulated mouths) are used to
disseminate news and ideas through song.<br />
British artist <b>Stephen Nelson </b>
makes strange and highly personable objects and constructions, often
playfully domestic and comedic, using a wide variety of salvaged
materials selected for their colour, texture and character. Working with
anything from sea worn plastic toys, clay pipes, wire, painted drift
wood to cloth, carpet and leather. "Nelson’s sculptures have an
improvised and makeshift attitude, forming part of a curious world of
‘possible objects’ which defy critical context by reaching out through
their physicality." Paul Hobson<br />
<b>Richard Ducker’s</b>
film ‘URGENT: SLEEP BETTER’ evokes a sense of paranoiac dislocation
and loss. Part filmed on an iPhone, and part found footage, it forms a
tone poem to establish a montage of emotional disconnect. The film’s
psychological relationship to the topography of landscape articulates,
often through counterpoint, the emotionally driven narrative.<br />
<b>Alison Cooke’s</b>
work includes a fragment of sediment core from 3m below the North Sea
bed, and ceramics made of clay collected from the edges of Doggerland’s
UK and European borders. An ongoing project, her work here examines
future remnants of the human race.<br />
With thanks to the research team behind Europe’s Lost Frontiers.<br />
<b>Sula Hancock’s</b>
detailed installation takes a playful look at how geographical
environments and life forms influence each other, paying particular
attention to the cultures that might develop when the life forms, whilst
as intelligent as humans, are not concerned with the ‘I want more’ and
‘this is mine’ mentalities.<br />
<b>Melanie King's</b>
anthotypes show the B46 iceberg which has detached from the Pine Island
Glacier in West Antarctica - a clear indicator of global warming. The
anthotype is a photographic print using plant matter to create an image,
which will slowly fade with time, mirroring the fragility of our
environment.<br />
<b>Clare Burnett</b> takes the wheel as a
symbol of past and future development, a fossil of the past and hope for
the future as a new Doggerland emerges. She scavenges lost wheels
that steered boats across the North Sea and transforms them into absurd
yet functional objects.<br />

this season where the dead, including martyrs and saints are remembered,
Art Space Portsmouth is hosting a fiendish gathering of practitioners,
who use a variety of processes and approaches to investigate this
subject.</span></span></span></div>

Bodies
and reality are left behind, suspended as we journey inside our heads.
Sleeping is a place for dreaming, a place to reinvent our experiences,
where fantasies and nightmares roam free. The body’s unconscious vessel
inhabits a space between the living and the dead. The head is a
recognisable mask adrift from its personality. Those awake, await
consciousness to return, to reanimate the gaze and connect.<br /> <i>Sleepy Heads</i> explores
the figure in relation to the unconscious, fantasies, masks, memories,
dreams, autobiography, sleeping, sleepers, and death. This exhibition

New Doggerland is a new multi-disciplinary artists project for a future imagining of physical and cultural re-connection between Britain and the European mainland. Doggerland is the name given to the ancient landmass, now submerged, that once connected Britain to Northern Europe. What if a new land mass rises up and we become physically part of the mainland again?<br />
New Doggerland is a project about future land and humans. It asks questions to which the exhibitors and participants will respond with different ideas and answers. Who will be living there and how? It may evoke a Ballardian dystopia, or ideas of possible Utopia. Or could New Doggerland be the heterotopia where we go to experience 'other' selves, a place of becoming?<br />
About the artwork: featured works include textiles, sculpture, ceramics and installation. Frances Burden's stitched pieces and works on paper range from the uniformity of Orwell and Huxley to the wild Egyptian glamour of Earth Wind and Fire, to explore the common themes of future imagining the look of dress and costume. Her pieces here are a sample selection for the everyday and the ceremonial. Sculptor Deborah Gardner considers future shifting plant environments from the local to the alien and imaginary considerations of plants in space, partly inspired by recent images of NASA’s experiments with growing plants on space craft and science fiction visions of extra-terrestrial colonisation. Ceramic artist Jane Millar envisions a future crisis of lost knowledge. Her Orrery attempts a narration of origins and contingencies, while a Werkbund type traveller's display case of wave forms triggers unrecovered memories and soothes future human survivors' feelings of loss. Artist Sarah Sparkes followed her MA with studying for an archaeology diploma in the pre-history of southern Britain. Sparkes returns to her past research and assimilates this with themes from science fiction. She has imagined her work and New Doggerland as a manifestations from the sentient ocean in Stanislaw Lem's Solaris.</div>

Gen Doy performance 7.30pm<br />
<br />
The Ghost Tide - coinciding with the festivals of Hallowe'en, All Souls and the Day of the Dead - takes as its starting point the perspective that ghosts exist as an idea, or as part of a belief system, across cultures, across national borders and throughout recorded history. Most languages contain words to describe the ghost, spirit or immaterial part of a deceased person. Often, these words - like the type of ghost they describe - have traversed borders and been assimilated across cultures. <br />
The exhibition, situated next to the Thames Barrier in South-East London, evokes ghosts as a migratory tide, washed up along the shore of the Thames their historical baggage in tow. It also explores the presence of artists in this part of London, as a migratory tide of creative flotsam and jetsam which ebbs and flows as the city gentrifies and develops.<br />
<br />
Featured works include sculpture, installation, film, sound, performance and wall based works. The exhibition will include installations and outdoor interventions, as well as public events. The Ghost Tide features works by over 30 UK and international artists. <br />

<br />
In May and July 2018, Sparkes & Thompson will be artists in residence at Allenheads Contemporary Arts. Our mission, to create sonifications of the invisible
interacting forces that connect space and time in and around the <a data-mce-href="http://www.northpennobservatory.org.uk/" href="http://www.northpennobservatory.org.uk/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">North Pennines Observatory</a>.
The adjacent reservoir will be transformed into the Cosmic Pond, where
aquatic lifeforms can be heard responding to the celestial rhythm of the
dark skies above.<br />
<br />
We will invite visitors to join us collecting
data, sounds, images and narratives from various locations around
Allenheads, recording night-time activity at the Cosmic Pond with
portable sound recorders and hydrophones. Visitors can also take part in
nocturnal sound walking and nature recording.<br />
Check the Sparkes & Thompson <a data-mce-href="http://sparkesthompson.art/news/" href="http://sparkesthompson.art/news/" target="_blank">news page</a> for project updates.<br />
<br />
BEYOND
is an ambitious project involving an eclectic mix of artists, curators,
scientists and audiences to take advantage of its new on-site
astronomical observatory and to consider the word BEYOND as an open
ended starting point for discussion, research and the creation of new
work.<br />

Inspiral London is an artist devised walking trail, which anyone can follow. It leads from the centre of London and spirals outwards to Gravesend. It took three years for us to walk it. The 2018 Inspiral London Night Walking Festival is in part a celebration of the conclusion of this first phase of the project. <br />
<br />
The Inspiral London festival of nocturnal walking, offers 4 days of
curated walks, art, talks and exploration across North Kent starting at
the end /beginning of the Inspiral Trail. By reimagining the
long-distance night walks of Dickens – from central London to Gads Hill –
Inspiral takes you on a journey of wild, ludic and untrammelled
adventure..<br />

When a friendless old widow dies in the seaside town of Crythin, a
young solicitor is sent by his firm to settle the estate. The lawyer
finds the townspeople reluctant to talk about or go near the woman's
dreary home and no one will explain or even acknowledge the menacing
woman in black he keeps seeing. <br /> <br /> Ignoring the towns-people's
cryptic warnings, he goes to the house where he discovers its horrible
history and becomes ensnared in its even more horrible legacy.<br /> <br />
This Central Television production of The Woman In Black, adapted for TV
by Nigel Neale from Susan Hill's classic horror novella was broadcast
on Christmas Eve in 1989 and repeated only once in 1994. However, the
film is often held up as one of the most potent, paralysingly spooky
screen adaptations of a ghost story ever made. The film has been
described by Reece Shearsmith (League of Gentleman) as “the most
terrifying programme I’ve ever seen”. Without giving away any spoilers,
there are some shocking moments in this TV adaptation which will linger
in the memory of anyone who sees it.<br /> <br /> <a data-lynx-mode="asynclazy" href="https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DKwtFRXWIGK8&h=ATN314WQdNrpiwmgaRgw3LYngxawmA1N4pcTzm9LsNnPiYCi1zvjAu6jPSHddWf7X1pvakCcbYYxJskg9Ikhy4qF5l06piFWmQAZw2dt_p9FnArcuYkjGJSn" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/<wbr></wbr><span class="word_break"></span>watch?v=KwtFRXWIGK8</a></span></span><br />

An unforgettable mixture of bubblegum teen melodrama and grisly
phantasmagoria, Obayashi’s deranged fairy tale Hausu (House) is one of
Japanese cinema’s wildest supernatural ventures and a truly startling
debut feature. Adapted from an idea from Obayashi's young daughter, the

hunting adventure, but there are sophisticated undercurrents that hint
at the dislocation in Japanese culture pre and post second world war.<br /> <br /> Distressed by her widowed father’s plans to remarry, Angel sets off with six <span class="text_exposed_show">of

and cobwebbed interiors long-held emotional traumas have terrifyingly
physical embodiment and the girls will have to use all their individual
talents if any are to survive.<br /> A roller-coaster ride without brakes,
House is by turns sinister, hilarious and curiously touching, with
ceaseless cinematic invention and a satirical, full-blooded approach to

<strong>About the Exhibition</strong><br />
British
Council is pleased to support ‘No Such Thing As Gravity’ – an
exhibition showcasing arts and creative technology presented by UK’s
leading media art centre – Foundation for Art and Creative Technology
(FACT) in Liverpool and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA),
the leading museum for digital arts and creativity in Taichung. Curated
by Professor Mike Stubbs, artistic director of FACT and Dr. Rob La
Frenais, guest curator from the UK, the exhibition attempts to explore
the unknown areas and controversial issues in science through the lenses
of artists and creative technologists. Hosted at National Taiwan
Museum of Fine Arts from April 22 to June 25, the exhibition will show
to audience the trend of cross-disciplinary collaboration between

A multi media installation, the GHost Formula is a ghost research area,
a visulaisation of Sparkes' own research into ghosts as part of her
project GHost. The GHost formula includes a central 'portal' - The GHost
Tunnel, a reference library of ghost books from across disciplines, a
collection ghost hunting equipment, The GHost Machine - a robot based on
a neuroscience experiment, <a data-mce-href="http://www.theghostportal.co.uk/" href="http://www.theghostportal.co.uk/">a website archiving Liverpool ghost stories</a> and culture and various sculptural interventions.<br />

<br />
<br />

<b>6 Caroline Place, Stonehouse, Plymouth PL1 3PR<br />
11am – 6pm Fri – Sun</b><br />
Our interior space for living is where we are most revealed, as here
we make our most personal mark. The temporary domestic space at Caroline
Place showcases the work of 8 artists and designers working with
everyday materials, transforming the mundane into objects of desire.<br />
The unheimlich of Freud’s analysis wherein things pertaining to
homeliness and domesticity are somewhat wrong footed by one thing or
another, subjective to be sure, make us question what exactly ‘home’ is.
A place? A feeling? A tribe we belong to? This is a subject that has
substantial contemporary currency as migration and dislocation
move cultures from places of conflict or through economic displacement.
Small items may be carried from one place to another – or left behind,
to be found later and integrated into the scheme of things. Such items
and dislocation surface in the disrupted home environment of the Uncanny
World of Interiors.<br />
<br />
Artists showing: Madeleine Boulesteix, Oliver Burns-Garside, Bianca
ChudleyLeCorre, Sarah Doyle, David Edmond, Sarah Sparkes, Charlotte
Squire and Olivia Aggett (currently undertaking a residency at Caroline
Place drawing directly onto the walls and wallpaper).<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><b>Sarah Sparkes</b> will present a series of works exploring infinities, the void and it's intrusion into the domestic and everyday. <i>FLUE</i>
was originally created for a hollowed out space, once a fireplace, for
Other Rooms exhibition in Basement Arts Project Space, Leeds. For VOID
exhibition, the artists has rebuilt the work within a dark recess below a
cupboard in the Belfry of St John's.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">Sarah will also be screening her film <i>Time You Need</i> (winner of the MERU Art*Science award 2015) on the <b>VOID</b> opening night, which</span><span style="font-size: small;"> explores
the potential for consciousness to time-travel within the material
limits of the human body. Using the symbolism of the portal and black
hole, as they are conceptualised in both science, science fiction and
the artists own work, the film presents a montage of narratives and
documentation of performances and installations, which together with
sonic and visual disruptions, create a liminal experience for the
spectator. The proposition is that one may find, herein, the time one
needs.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><b>Jane Grisewood</b>'s </span><span style="font-size: small;"><i>Black on Black</i>
series explores darkness, blackness – the void – through different
black paints on black paper. She will also be exhibiting Black Hole
photographs, a typology of voids found in numerous locations around the
world. </span><span style="font-size: small;">Grisewood, born and
educated in New Zealand, worked as an editor/publisher in London and New
York before studying fine art. She was awarded her PhD in 2010 at
Central Saint Martins, UAL where she teaches experimental drawing, and
has artist books in many collections, including Tate, V&amp;A, MoMA,
MACBA, Brooklyn Museum and Yale. </span><span style="font-size: small;">Working
across media, she investigates time and transience through the line,
